Government Incentives for Solar Homes in Malaysia

Getting solar panels can be expensive for certain homeowners. And if you’re planning to install a solar homes in Malaysia BUT it’s out of your budget, this article is for you!

Good thing is, that the Malaysian government and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) offer incentives and programs for Malaysian residents for switching to solar power systems. 

Solar Homes in Malaysia: Net Energy Metering

NEM is known as Net Energy Metering. It is a mechanism for solar owners to generate their own electricity from the solar PV system and offset their electricity bills (1:1 basis). This means you can use excess solar energy to offset your electricity bills!

In 2021, our government has launched NEM 3.0 to offer more opportunities for homeowners to install Solar PV System and own your solar homes in Malaysia. The NEM 3.0 is divided into 3 different categories as such: 

  1. NEM Rakyat Programme 
  2. NEM GoMEn Programme (Government Ministries and Entities) 
  3. NOVA Programme (Net Offset Virtual Aggregation)

Now, you might be wondering what are the differences between these 3 types? No worries, here are the explanations.

NEM Rakyat Programme

NEM Rakyat Programme is only open for domestic account holders who own a residential building. Verdant will cover the application if you are planning to have solar homes in Malaysia. The implementation date is from 1st February 2021 to 31st December 2023 with a 100MV of the quota.

4kWac for single-phase, 10kWc for three phases

NEM GoMEn Programme 

The NEM GoMEn is known as the Government Ministries Entities. This program is specifically for government buildings. This program is only eligible to government agencies and departments that consist of ministry, department, or statutory bodies established by the government at all levels of administration. 

Quota

100MW

Application Date

1 February 2021

Period Offered

31 December 2023 (3 years)

Offset Period

10 Years

Mechanism

NEM 1:1 (12 Months)

Capacity limit

1MWac per agency account

NOVA Programme 

NOVA Programme is known as Net Offset Virtual Aggregation. This programme is only eligible for commercial and industrial consumption. 

Quota

600MW

Application Date

1 April 2021

Period Offered

31 December 2023 (3 years)

Offset Period

10 Years

Mechanism

SELCO+(1 Month)

Capacity limit

Net off: 1MWac
Nett Off + Virtual Aggregation: 5MWac
